In the UK as a whole, the creative industries are an important part of the overall economy - as a percentage of GDP, the UK has the largest creative industries sector in the world. Figures relating to the third quarter of 2010 state that some 1.3 million jobs are to be found directly within the creative industries. The export of services in 2009 accounted for 10.6% of all the UK's service exports from the UK. In a 2009 UK Trade & Investment survey, business leaders cited the provision of arts and culture as a critical determinant in investment location decisions-even more important than a favourable tax regime.
Cardiff’s creative offer has been strengthened recently with the opening of the new BBC Wales drama studios – Roath Lock – in Cardiff Bay. In just 13 months, 175,000 square foot of HD-ready studios have been constructed and fitted out to provide a permanent, purpose-built home to four flagship BBC dramas – Casualty, Pobol y Cwm, Doctor Who and Upstairs Downstairs – as well as new productions in the future.
Equally exciting in these times of very high youth unemployment is the BBC's commitment to start an apprenticeship scheme in the next month, in partnership with the independent sector and Skillset Cymru. The BBC will select 24 apprentices and provide on-the-job practical training and experience as well as classroom-based college learning leading to a level 3 certificate in creative and digital media. Twelve-month work placements will also be available with BBC Cymru Wales and with independent film companies.
In another exciting move, the Doctor Who Experience is moving from Olympia to a permanent home in Cardiff Bay opening summer 2012. A recent report has projected visitor numbers of up to 250,000 a year and a value of £13m annually to the city's economy.
To further promote Cardiff’s economy, Cardiff & Co has established the Creative Cardiff showcase to promote the city’s creative economy to a national and international audience.
