Experts line-up for World Cup

Back to news list

Wales is set play an important role at every match in the World Cup after an innovative product devised by experts from the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC) has been selected to take to the pitch at the tournament.

UWIC’s National Centre for Product Development and Research (PDR) has teamed-up with Bowcom, a Cardiff based company, to design and develop a pioneering new pitch line-marking product.

The paint applicator will be used to mark the lines on pitches at every stadium as well as all 32 training pitches being used by countries taking part in the tournament in South Africa.

After being approached with a design brief by Bowcom, which is a market-leading supplier of line-marking equipment, PDR undertook the design development of the product which has revolutionised the industry because unlike its competition it is electric as opposed to mechanical.

“Bowcom is a great example of a company willing to look outside for innovation. They were keen to allow us the opportunity to present a range of alternative solutions to the processes typically employed,” said Dale Harper, Product Designer at PDR.

“The result was an industry changing product, one which utilises newer and more effective manufacturing processes whilst also remaining lean in material and fabrication costs. The product has brought increased revenue streams to the company and a better product to consumers,” he added.

Bowcom supplies equipment to some of the UK’s leading sports clubs and stadiums including Manchester United and the Millennium Stadium.

UWIC’s PDR centre is a world leading research, design and innovation organisation which has helped companies from around the world to discover, design and develop world beating products.
