Cardiff University drug acquired by Bristol-Myers Squibb
American pharmaceutical giant Bristol-Myers Squibb has agreed the purchase of US biotech company Inhibitex, in a $2.5Bn (£1.6bn) deal which includes the promising new anti-hepatitis C drug INX-189, first designed and prepared in Cardiff University.
The buy-out means Bristol-Myers will continue the development of INX-189, a Hepatitis C drug first created by Professor Chris McGuigan at the Welsh School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Nearly 175,000 homes and businesses in Wales are poised to benefit from super-fast broadband as part of a major expansion of BT’s roll-out plans.
Abergavenny, Bargoed, Briton Ferry, Caerleon, Llandaff, Mold, Morriston, Newbridge, Newport, Pontypool, Pontypridd, Prestatyn, Roath (Cardiff), Sketty, Tonypandy and Wrexham are the latest places included in the company’s £2.5 billion roll-out of fibre broadband. It will take the number of homes and businesses being passed by the new super-fast network in Wales to 475,000.

Metro rail network for Cardiff city region
South East Wales needs a "metro" rail network to promote economic growth in the region and beyond. A report commissioned by the Cardiff Business Partnership (CBP) calls for an investment of £2.5bn over 10 years to connect Cardiff, Newport and the valleys. By 2025 it should be possible to travel from the Heads of the Valleys to the capital in 40 minutes, it says.
BBC drama centre officially named Roath Lock/Porth y Rhath
The first phase of BBC Cymru Wales’ new drama production centre was completed today (20.01.11) as the official name of the ambitious project was revealed.
Located in the newly-named Porth Teigr area of Cardiff Bay, the studios will be called Roath Lock - Porth y Rhath in Welsh - the broadcaster announced today. The 170,000 square foot studios will be equivalent in size to three football pitches, providing a permanent home to three flagship BBC dramas - Casualty, Pobol y Cwm and Doctor Who - as well as new productions in future.

Cardiff Airport has revealed plans to develop its terminal building.
The £5m redesign, part of the airport's wider £15m investment strategy, has reached the planning stage and work could start later this year.
Plans have been drawn up to extend the front of the terminal, link the arrivals and departures halls, and provide new food and retail services.
BBC Drama Centre - new home for Dr Who and Casualty in the heart of Cardiff Bay
Plans have been unveiled by BBC Wales to build a new TV production centre to house dramas such as Doctor Who and Casualty.
The broadcaster said work at a site in Roath Basin in Cardiff Bay could start within the next six months.
Its director Menna Richards said the centre would bring together a range of different dramas.
The BBC confirmed last year that the filming of Casualty would switch from Bristol to Cardiff.
The drama centre plan is part of the BBC's commitment to double television network production from Wales by 2016.

£190k Investment in Cardiff University spin-out Medaphor
Fusion IP (AIM: FIP), the Cardiff university commercialisation company which turns university research into business, is pleased to announce that Medaphor, which has developed an advanced ultrasound training tool, has raised £190,000, including £75,000 each from Fusion and Finance Wales.
Medaphor is developing a “virtual reality” ultrasound training device, called ScanTrainerTM, which combines high quality ultrasound images with world-class computer-based feedback and training. The product, which eliminates the current ultrasound training constraints of limited equipment, trainers and volunteers, can be applied to a number of different therapeutic areas.
Investment in Computing Excellence
A new £44m High Performance Computing (HPC) institute for Wales has been announced by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).
HPC Wales, which will be delivered by Cardiff and Swansea Universities, will be funded by £10m from BIS’s Strategic Investment Fund (SIF), together with contributions from European funds, Higher Education in Wales and the private sector. The HPC institute will be based in two hubs at Cardiff and Swansea Universities, with additional centres at Aberystwyth, Bangor and Glamorgan universities. It will provide companies with access to supercomputing resources, and is expected to create more than 400 new jobs.

A technology-based incubator in Cardiff has won an international award. The @Wales innovation centre for digital companies has been awarded the best science-based incubator 2009 award by Science Alliance at its conference in Sweden.

MSS Group was founded by directors Bill Mayne (chief executive), Jonathan Jones, Jamie Davies and Robert Little in 2005, with its services ranging from industrial cleaning to asbestos testing in school and hospitals. For its financial year to the end of March, it posted sales of £7.36m – having grown on average 63% from 2006 when it reported revenues of £1.7m.
