UK Competitive Index predicts a bright future for Cardiff

Back to news list

Cardiff will remain one of the stronger performing cities in the UK over the next decade according to the bi-annual UK Competitive Index produced by Professor Robert Huggins and Dr Piers Thompson, Cardiff School of Management, UWIC.

The methodology behind the report included a detailed analysis of several input and output factors - including areas such as R& D expenditure, economic activity rates, business start-ups, qualifications, unemployment rates and income.

Cardiff ranked 14th out of 43 cities in the UK with a population of 100,000 or over – an achievement which should not be underestimated given that many of the cities ranking above Cardiff have some of the most dynamic high-skilled business clusters in the UK.  In the extended core city competitiveness league, Cardiff is ranked in 4th position, behind only Edinburgh, Bristol and Manchester.

The index was launched on Monday 19 April at a Cardiff & Co networking event at the IOD in London. To see the UK Competitiveness Index 2010 in full, click here.
