In the inaugural fDi Strategy Awards 2016, Invest in Cardiff has taken prestigious honours, with awards going to cities all over the world for their efforts to promote, attract and retain investment in categories as diverse as regeneration, expatriate support, technology centres and job creation incentives.

The fDi Strategy Social Media Marketing Award for the Choose Cardiff Campaign

The ‘Choose Cardiff’ campaign – with the tagline ‘The World’s Closest Capital to London’ – promotes the city as the destination to visit, meet and invest in the UK. With more than 20 million visitors coming to the Welsh Capital each year, Cardiff is looking to build on its continued success as a thriving and vibrant European Capital city that has so much to offer.

Prompting Cardiff is a key priority and in doing so, the branding #ChooseCardiff has been created to represent a number of marketing campaigns to promote our city as a place to Visit, Meet and Invest to an international audience.

We have a dedicated page to the Choose Cardiff campaign. As well as 3 dedicated websites and Twitter accounts to promote Cardiff as a destination for investment, a city to visit and a city for conferences and events. The Choose Cardiff page is currently the second highest performing page on the website and the 3 twitter handles used to promote Cardiff have a combined following of 43K.

The Bespoke Award for a Regeneration Scheme for its work on the Cardiff Central Enterprise Zone

The Central Cardiff Enterprise Zone is a 140 acre (56.656 hectare) new business district to be developed in the heart of the city centre, right beside a major city centre station hub with first class transport links to London. Incentives for investment include business rate relief, accelerated planning and enhanced capital allowances.

The Cardiff Capital Region (CCR) City Deal is an agreement between the UK government, the Welsh government and the ten local authorities that comprise the CCR providing a £1.2 billion investment in the Cardiff Capital Region’s infrastructure through a 20-year Investment Fund. Over its lifetime, local partners expect the City Deal to deliver up to 25,000 new jobs and leverage an additional £4 billion of private sector investment.

City of Cardiff Council markets and promotes the Cardiff Capital Region as a world-class destination for business investment and tourism through a targeted programme of attending and hosting national and international events, conferences and summits promoting the city region’s key messages to investors.

Councillor Phil Bale (former Leader of Cardiff Council), commented:

“This is fantastic news. The City Council’s decision to invest in a new transport interchange in the heart of the city was key to kickstarting the amazing developments which are taking place around Central Square. This was a much-neglected part of the city which is now being transformed into a fabulous gateway to Cardiff and Wales. We expect the regeneration of this area to create thousands of jobs and it won’t stop at Central Square. Already we are seeing plans coming forward to regenerate Central Quay south of the railway station and the Dumball’s Road site. These are the final pieces in the jigsaw which would see the city centre connected to the Bay all the way along the riverfront. This will bring jobs, business and housing opportunities on a scale the city hasn’t seen for years.”

“With more than 20 million visitors coming to the Welsh Capital each year, Cardiff is looking to build on its continued success as thriving and vibrant European capital that has loads to offer. The Choose Cardiff campaign helped to raise the profile of the city and it’s great to see the campaign being recognised by this prestigious award. Last year Cardiff was voted in 7th place by fDi magazine across European mid-sized cities in terms of its FDI strategy and 9th place in terms of business friendliness, so it’s great to see that we are continuing to make Cardiff a great place for people to come and do business in. Our vision is to become Europe’s most liveable capital city and as the fDi Magazine awards show – our strategy is increasingly relevant to both UK and foreign investors.”
