Lights, Camera, Action as studio expansion plans backed

Plans to expand a major studio complex in Cardiff with a mix of film production studios, workshops and office space have been approved.

Great Point Studios, which is a UK subsidiary of Great Point Media and manages investments in the areas of film and television production finance, is behind an application to extend its existing Great Point Seren Studios site on Capital Business Park.

Previously known as Seren Stiwdios, the complex was built and developed by the Welsh Government in 2015. It has four large stages and productions shot at the location include The Huntsman: Winter’s WarSherlockShow DogsThe Crown and Doctor Who.

Great Point Studios took over the lease and management of the site from the Welsh Government in 2020.

Under plans prepared by Ove Arup and Partners, the expansion will include three purpose-built film studio buildings with a total area of approximately 61,500 sq ft alongside landscape adjustments, infrastructure work and enhancement of the biodiversity and ecosystem value of the site.

The proposed development – to the south of the existing Great Point Seren Studios building – would also contribute new jobs to Cardiff, facilitate investment opportunities and promote the UK as a global production hub.
